THE WCC STRATEGY FOR GLOBAL GROWTH

The World Cricket Council will unveil its global growth strategy, which places sportsmen's cricket firmly at the heart of its long-term ambitions. The system developed in partnership with WCC Members aims to strengthen, grow, and protect the game with the vision of more players, fans, and nations enjoying cricket.

The digital transformation of the sport will underpin the strategic pillars of strengthening, growing, and protecting to support cricket and connect directly with fans.

Strengthen

To strengthen the sport and drive greater engagement from what already exists. The WCC will deliver competitive cricket with context for all Members, invest in and grow women's cricket, build cricket among Associate Members and deepen fans' connection through digital transformation.

Grow

The WCC will get more people playing and engaging with cricket through its entry-level programme and enhanced education programmes for coaches, officials, and curators to grow the sport through more people and more places. As key identified new markets will, female participation will be prioritised to drive targeted growth.

Protect

Protecting the integrity of the sport and inspiring trust among fans is the third pillar of the strategic framework. COUNTRY CRICKET BOARD

The WCC will inspire people to construct a cricket board in their own country. In India, we formed the Indian cricket Control Board (ICCB) or, as we get the name, which will be the governing body for cricket in India and is under the jurisdiction of the WCC. The board will be formed as a society/company, registered under the country's government rule regulation. It is a consortium of state cricket associations/members/companies, and the state associations/members/companies select their representatives, who will elect the National Board Chief.

Board will have two International Cricket teams that represent the Country in International Cricketing, the nation’s men's cricket team and the national women's cricket team. The board organise matches and do the scheduling for both teams. Board also can run the India Cricket League.

Indian Cricket has made a fortune out of the gentleman's game. So, today, let's dive deep into cricket finance and understand how the Indian Cricket Board makes money? Apart from the everyday shock we receive from our uninvited guest’s covid-19, something else will leave us mind-blown, which is cricket. Cricket is the one thing that every Indian worships and idolises irrespective of the differences.

Well, if you think otherwise, then you might want to ask the millions and millions of fans to explain it better. In India, cricket is controlled by a centralised body placed under the ministry of youth affairs and sports, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). The Indian, Australian and England cricket boards (called the big three) dominate the International Cricket Council. And these three have their monopoly in International Cricket.

How Indian Cricket Board Makes Money?

This will lead us to the most crucial question, how does the Indian Cricket Board make money? The Indian Cricket Board has multiple sources through which it builds up its treasury. They are as follows.

Media rights

Indian fans don't mind ditching a night out to watch their favourite sport. And that happens to be the gauntlet that the Indian Cricket Board holds. The enormous fan base all set with their popcorns, every time the men in blue turn up to bat, gives Indian Cricket Board the negotiating power. Don't believe it? Then the numbers might help.

Approximately 1.6 billion viewers saw the 2019 Indian Men's world cup. If you use your calculators, you will notice that this is more than 50 times the views any of your favourite Netflix shows would have. In the year 2008, Sony Networks and the World sports network worked out a deal worth 8200 crores rupees, gaining the viewership rights of the Premier League alone. Fast forward to 2021, the Indian Cricket Board sold the exclusive telecast rights of the Premier League to the sports channel for a whopping 2.55 billion dollars, striking a five-year deal (2018 – 2022).

Title sponsorship

Companies love such a big audience. And they will try everything to make use of it. Title sponsor is one place companies can increase their brand awareness by getting more screen space in logo, advertisement space, etc.

Companies fight for this place. But don't worry, we have a resounding winner. PayTM owned by One97 Communications, will be the title sponsor of the Indian team for the next four years. You might be wondering how much it cost the company. Well, the company paid about 203.28 crores to close the deal. The deal applies for all domestic and international cricketing until 2023. In other words, they will be paying around 3.8 crores for every match played to the Cricket Board. That is a lot of numbers for sure! Sources claim that the amount bid by PayTM was more than half the one it received earlier.

Team sponsorship

Well, Indians' favourite game does not end its hunt there. The Indian Cricket Board also has several others coming forward to claim a spot. And one among them is the official team sponsors. For a long while, Sahara India held the position of India's official team sponsor.

But soon, the crown was passed on to Star sports and then to OPPO. Byju's took place as India's official Team sponsor following the line. Paying about INR 1,079 crores, it sealed the right until 31st March 2022. This means all our favourites, from one captain to another captain, will be wearing Byju's logo on their jerseys.

Series with other nations

The ICC conducts several international cricketing tours. And the revenue they make from the same is enormous. Earlier, the countries had an equal distribution of revenue. But later, under the new plan, the big three, which includes the Indian Cricket Board, take a significant portion of the income. This might trigger the question, how is that even possible? All thanks to the massive viewership.

The Indian cricket fans make up to 75% of the viewership that any international cricket game receives, mainly when team India appears. For instance, during the year 19–20 cricket series alone, the Indian Cricket Board bagged about 950 crores. No wonder how Indian Cricket Board is the richest one in the cricketing society.

Kit sponsors

Earlier Nike was its kit sponsor paying the Indian Cricket Board around 12.13 million dollars every year. But soon, the brand ended the contract making the Indian Cricket Board search for possible sources. Fortunately, MPL took its spot to be India's official kit sponsor.

They also joined hands with several other brands like Hyundai and Ambuja Cement as sponsors. So to the long list of numbers, add another 270 crores approx., which the Indian Cricket Board makes from these other sponsors.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

Add a lot of money, glamour and aggression to cricket, and you'll arrive at the money-minting cricket entertainment that is IPL! The IPL is a recipe for many components, from tickets to media rights. The total earnings are shared among the franchise, and of course, the Indian Cricket Board never fails to take a share. While giving a 50% to the franchises, the Indian Cricket Board keeps the rest. It does not end there.

The franchises will then have to provide the Indian Cricket Board with about 20% of their total revenue at the end of the series. So, you could say, effectively, the Indian Cricket Board pockets 60% of the central pool of revenue. Everyone will want to take centre stage with more than 400 billion views (viewing minutes) in the IPL. And Star India owns the broadcast rights. Apart from this, the Title sponsors pay above 2,100 crores to claim a spot. Ads also form a significant share of the revenue derived via IPL. Anyone who wants to display their ad between the matches will pay 12.5 lakhs per second. That's huge.

For instance, have a glance at the projected revenues of BCCI from IPL 2021:

The Indian Cricket Control Board is making approximately 4000 crores even without ticketing revenues. For context, that's about 1.5x times India's current budgetary allocation to Sports! And now you know why IPL is indeed a cash cow for the Indian Cricket Board.

Conclusion

Cricket is not just a game; it's an emotion. Every Indian, whether they like it or not, will always keep track of it in some way or the other.

So let’s join hands and touch the sky.
